Inserted movie dissappers in PowerPoint during playing

I insert a movie (avi or wmv format) into PowerPoint 2003. It appears as
still picture, but when I click on it to play it disappears. It turns white.
What am I doing wrong?

A few possibilities spring to mind :
update your video driver
update Direct X
path to the movie is to long, must not be longer than 120 characters.

White box is ususally a sign of a too long path-length. See #2 at

OK, when I do it I get a black box. What is that a sign of? My path isn't
that long.

I went through a bunch of messages before this one and found much information
and my answer in the many fine links by the regulars. In my case it was
hardware acceleration too high. When I dialed that back, the cines played
ok. What a great group of experts here. I am going to visit:
