Why does Windows Movie Maker wmv not work in Powerpoint 2003?

I can insert an avi file into Powerpoint 2003 and play it as movie. However,
if I edit the avi in Windows Movie Maker and save it as a smaller wmv file in
same directory, the wmv will not play after being inserted into Powerpoint
2003? It usually turns to a white box unless the wmv is a fade from black, in
which case the frame stays black.

This occurs on two computers, a Dell laptop and a custom desktop, both
running WinXP with Office 2003 with all available updates. Both have 2 GB
RAM, the laptop has 128 MB video and the desktop 256 MB.

I am using Windows Movie Maker 2.1.4026.0

I read that the video driver could cause problems of this type so I loaded
the latest drivers for the video card on the desktop, a Radeon 9800 XT 256.
The Dell laptop says it has up-to-date drivers when I run Dell diagnostics.

All available WinXP2 and Office 2003 updates were installed on 10/27/2006.

The avi files that I am able to load are in the same directory as the wmv
files so the problem is unlikely to be related to path length. The path is;
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Movies\Movie1

The wmv files that I make in Windows Movie Maker play fine in Windows Media
Player. However, they will not play when inserted into PowerPoint 2003,
although avi files and the wmv test files from MS support play fine in
PowerPoint. Therefore, there is likely to be a problem in the way that
Windows Movie Maker is writing the wmv files.

Excellent! Thanks for lead on PFCMedia. It solved the problem; don't know why
since the file size changed only slightly and all the files were in the same
directory.

Is this just a known bug in Windows Movie Maker or in PowerPoint or both? A
few other forums are full of similar problems with using movies in PowerPoint.

In any case, thanks for sorting me out.

Next problem is that one of the three projectors we are using (a small Dell)
won't show the wmv movies in PowerPoint although it shows them in WMP fine.
