Insert text under a word

I am creating a standardized test passage, just like this:

I can't figure out how to add little numbers under words like in the
passage. Any help would be appreciated. I am using Word 2007 and tried the
equation builder but the text on top needs to be even with the main text of
the paragraph.Thanks.

Found a simple solution. I just inserted little text boxes under the words.
Sometimes you need to think out of the box a little!
