Insert Menu not showing with Alt+I

I'm having a problem with the shortcut key to the Insert
menu. When I press Alt+F it opens the File menu and
shows all the options within. All the other menus work
the same way except for the Insert menu. When I press
Alt+I for the insert menu it just highlights "Insert" and
I have to press the down arrow to access the menu. It
has just recently begun to do this and I want it the way
it was before. For example to Insert an object,
previously I just had to hit Alt+I, then O for Object.
Now I have to hit Alt+I plus the down arrow, then press
O. It adds another keystroke which is particularly
annoying if you're not used to it. Any help/advice would
be greatly appreciated!!

Hit alt-I a couple of times and see if you can see what menu gets highlighted.

I'm guessing you have another toolbar that has an control on it that has the "i"
as its accelerator key.

Sometimes, just repeatedly hitting alt-i while staring at the screen will help.

(and if not, it's pretty fun to do anyway!)

(and remember, it could be your own customized toolbar that's conficting with
Insert's alt-i.)
