Shortcut / Alt Key Issue

This is a pain that I have not been able to fix. I use the Alt+(key)
combinations to access menu items in Excel 2003. If I want to select a
different open workbook I type Alt+w, 2 (or 3 or whatever). If I want
to set up a simple filter I type Alt+d, f, f.

The problem recently started with the "Window" menu items. The Alt+
(key) combinations work for all menus except for the "Window" menu.
Now when I type alt+W, f (to freeze panes) highlights the "File" menu.
I have to click the down arrow to get into the "Window" menu and then
type the shortcut key.

This only happens in Excel and it is driving me crazy. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I think you have two controls that each have an accelerator key of w.

If you watch the toolbars and hit alt-w, you should be able to see what controls
are being activated. If you can't see it, try hitting alt-w, then enter to
activate that control.

After you find the second (or more???) controls that use alt-w, you'll have a
choice.

Do you use that other control?
If no, you could remove it from the toolbar (or close that toolbar)

If yes (but not by shortcuts), you could remove that accelerator key from that
control.
Tools|customize (just to see that dialog)
Right click on the control that you want to "fix"
Remove the ampersand (&) from the Name property.
And then close that dialog.
