Incremental numbering on word template

I have a user that wants to create a word template that contains a
number which automatically increments by 1 each time a copy (document)
of the template is opened. They are setting up a simple invoicing
template and therefore want to generate a new number each time a
document (based on this template)is opened.

Is there any way of doing this?
