incorrect RAM shown in windows XP

Hi everyone,

I am running Windows XP Pro 32 Bits, with AMD Dual Core 270B Opteron CPU,
4GB Legend RAM, with MSI K8N Master2- FAR motherboard but it is only showing
3GB in Windows System Properties(right click on "My Computer" and select
"properties"), but 4GB in BIOS.

I tried /PAE and /3GB switch stated in the article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283037, with no luck.

However, it is showing 4GB of "Total Physical Membory" if I go to
"Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information".

I also run a diagnotic tools called "Sandra" from "SiSoftware LTD", it
showing only 3GB is available as well.

Show I am quite confuse now. Has anyone come across this problem before?

Thanks

Yeah, they've come across it, sorry I don't have a solution for you but
I'm very curious; what the hell do you need 4GB of RAM in XP for? In my
eXPerience anything over 1GB is a waste of money and for most folks even
512MB is pa-lenty. If you're doing intensive video production stuff
you'd probably be better off with an old Indigo box.

Fairly common problem faced while using HT CPUs, especially AMD Opteron.
Has happened in one of my machine. (Having an Intel, 3.4 HT Extreme Ed. CPU,
2 MB L3 cache.)
When I updated the Bios it showed the correct mem.
Check machine’s Bios…….. Whether it’s correct & updated.
Regards!

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the BOOT.INI tab.
Click on the Advanced Options button and make sure that the /MAXMEM=
checkbox is clear and that there is no data item entered for that
line.

Good luck
