I just got a SuperMicro X7DVL-E Dual Xeon-Dual-Core machine with 4GB of RAM.
The BIOS recognizes 4GB but the system information utility in WinXP (32bit)
reports only 2GB. So how can I get Windows to recognise all 4GB of RAM.

I did a search on "using 4GB of RAM on windows XP" on windowskb.com and got
tons of articles and read some at support.microsoft.com but unfortunately
none of them gave me the answer. The /3GB swicth and /PAE are not the answers.
I got access to a m/c with 4GB RAM and the system information displays total
physical memory as 4GB on that m/c. Here are the boot.ini and system.ini
files on that m/c which are no different from those on mine:
boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

system.ini:

; for 16-bit app support

[drivers]
wave=mmdrv.dll
timer=timer.drv

[mci]
[driver32]
[386enh]
woafont=dosapp.FON
EGA80WOA.FON=EGA80WOA.FON
EGA40WOA.FON=EGA40WOA.FON

firstly, check your cmos/bios.
windows uses the data from the bios
for the operation of the system.
it may be likely the cmos is
only reporting 2 gigs instead of
4.

if cmos still has troubles after having
search for the optimal hardware settings,
double check to see if the ram is seated
correctly into the slot.

also, you can download a free memory analyzer
from microsoft.com.

could simply be the other ram is incompatiable
with your current configuration....

checked bios. it reports 4gb. i am surprised that this (the problem that i
posted) seems to be a common well known problem without a well known solution
(at least i haven't found one after scanning through significant threads on
discussion forums and web pages).
