incompatible print settings

When I select print quality settings with any Microsoft
product and try to change the settings to black instead
of color I get an error of "incompatible print settings"
then it says something about "300x300 dpi do I want to
fix automatically or manually".
I'm using an HP 950 series printer.
Has anyone experienced similar problems?
