Incompatibility - XP and G85 All-In-One

C

Carlene K. Gorham

Purchased 854n PC. From outset- no printer capability.
Worm invaded... Downloaded all necessary-Corrected that.
Back to printer...
Technician advised I needed to bring PC in to have HP
download of:
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1LOCALS~1\Temp\hpofficejetgseries
Went to HP.com-- put all all appropriate devices, ie.
G85- Windows XP, etc. where called for.
I downloaded above (8 hours or more approx.)
It was installed in C:\ProgramFiles\HewlettPackard\

I was advised it had removed my 'Old Version of:
Office Jet D, G, K, V Plus a variety of others printers
such as PSC 700, PSC 900...

The wizard walked me through installation - it was
installed, the PC did it's appropriate thing of shutting
down, booting and re-booting, etc.

Long story -- I tried both methods of installation for
the G85 to the 854n PC with XP--

I used the disk - appropriately
I used 'plug'n play - appropriately.

Bottomline-- It still does not accept my G85.

Can someone help me????

I am a senior citizen on social security and saved 3
years to buy this $2000 piece of ....

I can't afford another..either PC or PRINTER

Hewlett Packard won't help
Microsoft won't help
Best Buy won't help
Does anyone have Bill Gates phone number?

Bad part is-- I informed the salesperson at time of
purchase that I was going to use my G85---
One would think that IF there is an incompatibility - I
would have been informed????

Ahhh- salesmanship!!!!

Do I have recourse?

Thank you.

Hi Carlene --

I have had an HP G-series all-in-one working with Windows XP both at work
and at home without problems. I know that doesn't help you though -- but I
know that they're compatible. I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble.
Can you provide a little more detail? When you say, "it will not accept my
G85" what do you mean? Do you receive an error message when you install it?
When you try and use it?

Also, are you trying to use it via a parallel port (a big plug) or USB (a
little plug)? I would recommend USB.

You mentioned that you had the blaster worm. I've posted a set of steps to
help out if you're having a problem where the printer doesn't appear in
Printers and Faxes folder. The post is titled, "Blaster Update /
Disappearing Printers" and might be useful.

I hope this helps,

Hi Sage,
I am also having problems with my G-series printer
and Windows XP. I can print fine but whenever I open the
HP Director, the screen goes blank and it changes the
settings on my pc to 8-bit color from 32-bit color. As
soon as I exit from the HP Director, the screen goes
blank and then appears at 32-bit color again. Everything
looks awful when it's 8-bit so the scanner is unusable.

Are you having any problems with the HP Director? This
printer worked great with my old pc which ran Windows NT4.

HP thinks it is a problem with my PC because it works
fine with XP on other machines. Dell doesn't want to
support me because I didn't purchase the printer from
them even though this PC is only 2 months old.

Sandy
