Incoming call alerts

I am unable to get broadband and have only the one phone line ,so am missing some phone calls when on line,i am
considering buying a caller alert system,but have been told that windows xp can alert you to an incoming phone
call,but i cannot find out how to set this up,any help will be appreciated ps cannot use callwave as I am in the uk, that service only cover the usa
