I upgraded my computer from XP Home to XP Pro. Well, I lost my internet, for I can't get on the internet. I belive some TCP/IP files and settings I needed were deleted. So, to remedy this, I thought I would reinstall XP, but I don't want to delete all of the files on my hard drive/partition, and I heard of an in-place upgrade.
First step, less drastic, put the CD in the drive ready, exit the
Autorun and at Start - Run, run the line
SFC /SCANNOW
If you need to do a repair reinstall, I would first get the consolidated
security upgrade CD (free) from
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp
which will save a lot of trouble in getting fixes fairly well up to
date.
Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start
Setup (do not take 'Repair' at this stage), then after the license
agreement take 'Repair Installation'. This will retain your existing
software installations and most settings. But Updates will have to be
run again, especially SP1 unless your CD includes it;
It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get further patches, so as to be protected
against things like the BLAST and Sasser worms. Even with the CD you
will need the one against Sasser from
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.mspx and I
would also get that in advance to run before connecting
Always back up essential data before doing any major system operation
like this, if you are still in a position to do so
