I exported from my Outlook 2000 to a .pst file, put that on a jump drive, and
then got rid of that computer. I bought a new computer with Vista Home Basic,
and now can't import that .pst file. I did install Outlook 2000 on my new
system, but still no luck. I'm at a bit of a loss what to do next. Can anyone
help? Thanks!

in Outook - File; Data File Management, ADD then Choose "
"Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File (.pst).

HTH

Close, but that doesn't apply to Outlook 2000.
File-> Open-> Personal Data File...

Thank you, both of you. However, neither of these appears to apply to my
question about importing into Vista Mail. Even if I do File/Open/Personal
Data File in Outlook 2000, that just opens the PST I saved in Outlook 2000
back into the the place it originated - i.e., I saved a PST from from Outlook
2000, and now it appears you want me to open it back up again in 2000.

Thanks, both of you, for your help, but so far, I"m still stuck...

BTW, I even tried saving from Outlook into an Excel file... nothing seems to
be able to be able to be imported while within this new version of Vista
Mail. Very puzzling and a bit disturbing that Microsoft has made this so
difficult... it's not as if one is trying to move something from a UNIX mail
file to Outlook.... :-\

Yes, but once you've configured your pst-file with Outlook 2000 on your
Vista machine you can use Import from within Windows Mail to import the
pst-file from Outlook 2000.

Thank you. However, when I follow your instructions precisely, all it does is
want to open the PST file I just saved back into Outlook 2000, from whence it
originated. You note to configure Outlook 2000, but I didn't see any details.
So, I am still at point of origin. My next attempt will be to download a demo
version of Office 2007. If any one has any suggestions on maybe that working,
I'm all ears.

I did in my first post; File-> Open-> Personal Data File...

No, the issue is that you are trying to do 2 things at once;
-move to another computer
-switch from Outlook 2000 to Windows Mail

That is not a one step process.

Either do the conversion from Outlook 2000 to Outlook Express (via Import in
OE) on your old computer and transfer the dbx-files to your new computer
(Windows Mail is the successor of Outlook Express).

OR

Transfer your pst-file to your new computer, configure it with Outlook and
then use Import from within Windows Mail to do the conversion.
