-- I have managed to get some .dbx files from Outlook Express on my defunct
computer onto a flash drive. When I try to import them to Windows mail I get
a message saying "No messages can be found in this folder or another
application is running that has the required files open?."

"my computer" indicates the files are in the folder I am choosing (lots of
kbytes), and there is nothing else running on my machine. Can anybody help?

You need the whole folder, in particular the "folders.dbx" file; that is
the key. You can actually re-create that with another OE install on
another XP system, but it's a bit of a pain. You set up the account
(doesn't matter if it connects), create the required mail folders, exit OE.
Go to the the containing folder, and swap in the old folders for the new
empty ones. Restart OE to check, then export the results.
