Imported document from WP. Now new ftnote insert numbers screwy

Document imported from WP to Word. 300 footnotes. When I go back to insert
new footnotes in the text, it does not roll the previous footnotes forward.
Even if I change the number to i.e. #8, it puts in some other number, often
with a little tiny 8888888 under the new number in the footnote section.

When you imported the document, did you clean it or strip out the WordPerfect
schmutz? I suspect that you didn't and that is why you are encountering
problems now.

To clean it highlight the entire document and copy it and then open WordPad
and paste it there. Then you can copy it again and paste it into a new Word
Document. What I personally do is Paste Special and then unformatted text.

You will lose your formatting, but you will then have a clean document that
you can format with styles, etc. and it will behave for you.

This is an increasingly common complaint. Previous converters used to handle
footnotes better; I can only assume something has changed in WP. About all
you can do is recreate the footnotes, inserting new "real" footnotes and
pasting the text of the "fake" footnotes into them, then deleting the "fake"
footnotes.
