Word 2003 Footnotes Specialized

I prepare booklets for a Bible Study. I use Logos to import New American
Bible (NAB) verses into my booklets that go along with our study guide.

The problem: the combination of NAB source footnotes using a cross symbol
and importing to Word 2003 from Logos presents me a challenge. Footnotes are
important but I can't get the cross footnote icons from the source NAB to
change to normal numbered or alphabetized characters within my Word document.

A number of years ago I figured out a macro to search for the crosses and
using the Custom Mark - Symbol functions in Notes Option I was able to change
the crosses to std. icons. But after a Word update that changed and my fix
did not work anymore.

I now have to use the Notes Option to insert a character in the footnote
which is alphabetical (a,b,c, etc) for the page which works okay but then I
have to use "Go to Footnote" to find the corresponding cross footnote icon in
the text, delete the cross footnote icon and type in the correct,
corresponding character. It is not synchronized though, with the footnote,
so any paging changes creates havoc.

This has been okay for a while, but now my clients (church folk) are asking
for my output in different formats. When I change from a booklet format to a
full page format, the footnote characters change correspondingly in the
footnote area along with the change in paging, but the footnote characters in
the text are not synchronized so I have to go to each one and change it to
match the footnote character.

I hope you can help me figure out an automated way to change the footnotes
from the cross footnote icons to normal alphabetized symbols.

Thank you - Kevin Ryan (e-mail address removed)

Your problem isn't at all clear. Are these source footnotes actually
footnotes in Word's terms? Or are they coming in as something along
the lines of text boxes with paragraph numbering, which then have to
be called by cross references?

What does the cross symbol do? If there's more than one note on a
page, they don't all have the same symbol, do they?

If they're real footnotes, and you want to use a cross as the note
marker, if you click the Symbol button on the footnote-formatting
panel and change the font to Wingdings, you'll find several -- just
double-click on one of them, it goes into the "custom mark" box, and
becomes the marker for the next footnote.

They are truly footnotes in that if you highlight the "cross footnote icon"
in the text, Word displays the footnote text that is in the footnote at the
bottom of the page. I call them source notes because they actually come from
the source text that way and Logos just passes them trhough as footnotes in
Word. They link but I can't find a way to get them changed to consecutive
numbers or alpha characters.

Yes, they are all the same "cross footnote icon". I can't figure out a way
to change them to "real" numbers or alpha characters in serial form.

I think they are real footnotes because of the link to display. I used to
be able to do what you mention, but after a Word update a year or so ago, it
did not work anymore on the same text.

Below is what it looks like. These are copied and pasted but of course they
are not linked like in Word.

Galatians 1:1
1 † † Paul, an apostle not from human beings nor through a human being but
through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead,

___________________________________
† [1–5] See the note on Romans 1:1–7, concerning the greeting.

† [1] Apostle: because of attacks on his authority in Galatia, Paul defends
his apostleship. He is not an apostle commissioned by a congregation (Phil
2:25; 2 Cor 8:23) or even by prophets (1 Tim 1:18; 4:14) but through Jesus
Christ and God the Father.

I have a test document I can send you if you would like, just give me an
email address.

My experience with custom footnote marks in Word is that they can (I think)
be changed but not converted to normal numbering as part of a series. To do
that you have to copy out the text of the footnote, delete the footnote, and
reinsert it as a normal footnote with a serial number. Sorry!
