footnote numbering

Ako

I merged two Word documents, one dated 1/2002 and the other 12/2002. I don't
remember when I installed Word 2003 and now use Word 2007 on Xp Pro and
Vista (business and home) but save as Word 2003 when circulating outside my
office.

I used the 12/2002 document to important paragraphs with footnotes from the
1/2002 document but cannot get the footnote number to correct. The same is
true even where I have removed paragraphs with footnotes from the original
12/2002 documents.

I followed various tips found in this ns and tried converting to endnotes
back to endnotes, resetting the number from continuous to each section,
etc., but no go.

So must I manually redo all these footnotes? There may be forty at this
point and most of them are not brief.

If worst comes to worst, the only "redoing" you'd have to do wouldn't
be retyping the footnotes, but rather doing "Insert Footnote" next to
where the existing reference is, then Drag 'n' Drop the text of the
footnote (select it all except the footnote number at the beginning
and the final paragraph mark -- be sure to turn on Show Non-Printing
Characters, Ctrl-Shift-8) into the new empty footnote paragraph.

Then select the in-text footnote reference for the footnote that is
now empty, and Delete it. (If the empty footnote doesn't automatically
go away, you'll know that at some point in your converting and
importing, it changed from a real footnote to static text, and you'll
need to delete the empty paragraph mark as well as the in-text
