New Vista laptop w/ Windows Mail. Running Outlook 2002 on another laptop w/
Win2000. Want to import all messages from Outlook 2002.

When I select "File/Import/Messages..." and choose "Microsoft Outlook" as
the format to import in Windows Mail, I immediately receive the error
"Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client. An error has occurred."

What's up? How do I get past this? Is there another way to import the
messages?

Windows Mail needs part of Outlook, also known as the MAPI client
under Vista, to be able to import the .pst files from Outlook.

You have two choices: 1. Install Outlook on the machine you are
moving the messages to. Versions 2003 and later work well, but
version 2002 works with a few problems. A free trial version will
run more than long enough to help transfer the messages. 2. First
transfer the messages from Outlook to Outlook Express on your
old computer, then transfer them from Outlook Express on your
old computer to Windows Mail on your new computer.

Note that some methods of copying the files to your new computer
can make them readonly. Make sure they are read-write instead
before you tell Windows Mail to import them.

Thanks, Robert - transferring the Outlook contacts and messages to Outlook
Express and then to Microsoft Mail worked great. I appreciate the help.

You're welcome.
