Import e-mails from MS Outlook

When I select Outlook in the import wizard a message box opens staitng that
"e-mail cannot be imported from a MAPI client. MAPI is not installed or there
was an error starting MAPI"

What's the problem here?

Do I need to install MAPI for WindowsVista/Windows Mail and if so how? Or is
there some other way to import the Outlook.pst file that I exported from
WinXP/Outlook?

Windows Mail cannot import a .pst file unless Outlook is installed on the
Vista computer.

You can install Outlook, copy the .pst to the Vista computer, open the .pst
with Outlook, then you can import into Windows Mail.

Or,
If you have Outlook installed on an XP computer, import the .pst data into
Outlook Express, copy the .dbx files and .wab file to the Vista computer,
and import into Windows Mail.

Dave,

I have Outlook Express 6 on my "old" computer that runs on XP, and Windows
Mail on my "new" computer that runs on 64 bit Vista. How do I get messages
from my "old" computer to my "new" computer. I have tried your
suggestion, but it didn't work. I copied the .dbx files to a flash drive,
copied the files from my flash drive to my "new" desktop, opened Windows
Mail, found and clicked on the Import button, clicked on Messages and OE6,
found the folder containing the .dbx files, clicked on on it. Some of the
..dbx files did not import. Any suggestions?

All you need to do is temporarily install Outlook on the Vista system. You
don't even need to run it or activate it. It can be a trial version, and
you can uninstall it as soon as you're done the import. Borrow an Office
2003 CD for the few minutes, if you can, and uninstall afterwards.

But the import won't work if Outlook isn't installed.

Hi Dave,
I'm afraid this didn't work.
I only have MS Outlook 2002 but that does run on Vista and I was able to
import the .pst file into Outlook corectly.
However, when I try to import to Win Mail from Outlok it still complains
about the MAPI file.
Anyway, at least I have a copy of my old e-mails for reference as long as I
need them.
Thanks anyway
Alan
