Can't import my messages from Outlook

When I try to import my messages from Outlook 2003, all I get is the cryptic
error message 'Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client. MAPI is not
installed on this computer or and error occurred while Initializing it. "

Typical Microsoft error message which I am sure means something to the team
writing this software, but it does help this user since I don;t have a clue
what MAPI is or does. I took the time to look at all the Vista features that
could be installed but found nothing mentioning MAPI or having a role in
e-mail exchange. All suggestions on how to fix this import problem are
appreciated.

Outlook saves messages in a .pst file. Windows Mail cannot import from a
..pst file unless Outlook is installed on the Vista computer.
1. Install Outlook on your new computer
Copy the .pst file to the new computer
Open the .pst file with Outlook.
In Windows Mail, File - Import - Messages - Microsoft Outlook
or- keep using Outlook, as it's probably better than WM

-OR-
2. Take the .pst file to a computer running Outlook and Outlook Express.
Import the .pst files into Outlook Express
export the messages to .dbx
take the .dbx files to the new computer
Import the .dbx files.

I have outlook 2003 installed. That is the first thing I tried. I even un-installed Window Mail and then reinstalled it, in case Outlook needed to be installed 1st.

Still get the same MAPI client error message.

My system runs Vista 64 bit OS using the hardware listed below:

All Microsoft updates are installed and all hardware drivers are the latest
available (but no Beta's)
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition 3.0GHz CPU
Gigabyte MA790 motherboard
8 GByte matched memory
Asus Nvidia 9800 GTX video card
Dual Raid 0 arrays plus one single 1 TByte hard dive (Dive C:)
