Found below in Explorer's Help, it's sort of opposit of what you want but
might be worth checking. When you get to the options bit you have to scroll
down a way to get to the Multimedia section. The circle, square, triangle box
icon is a symbol to say a picture goes in the page, if it's small box with a
red X it means it's something Explorer can't handle or has been told not to
handle, might be just barred or might be blocked for security. I'd be
interested myself if anyone can give a full explanation of what to do to see
iconed pictures in Explorer as I get the same thing myslef sometimes. Think
sometimes the picture icon comes up when Explorer is waiting the site to send
the picture the webpage says it should have but for some reason the picture
never gets downloaded - could it be it happens when the picture is not in the
place on the site where the link in the downloaded page's code says it should
be?
From explorer Help:
To turn off graphics to display all Web pages faster
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Multimedia, clear one or more of the Show pictures, Play animations,
Play videos, or Play sounds check boxes.
Notes
If the Show pictures or Play videos check box is cleared, you can still
display an individual picture or animation on a Web page by right-clicking
its icon, and then clicking Show Picture.
If the pictures on the current page are still visible after you clear the
Show pictures check box, you can hide them by clicking the View menu, and
then clicking Refresh.
