Downloading programs

Sometimes when I try and download a program all I get is a blank window with
the exception of a small rectangle with tiny square/circle/triangle inside
it in the top left hand corner. Can you tell me what it means please.

Do you have virus protection and have you checked for spyware?

Remove/uninstall any download managers you have put on for starters.
