Images blocked (sometimes)

Can someone suggest a way to let images get through? Most HTML messages come
through just fine but frequently I see only the outline of where a picture
should be with a red "x" in the upper left-hand corner of the box. Normally
there is no text displayed so I wonder if the whole message is interpreted
aas an image (?) Thanks for any suggestions.
 
it could be that the image url is no longer available on the server - very
likely if it's spam.
