I'm unable to download service pack 2

What's going on? You can't read either?

The Op possibly does not have SP1a installed. We do not know that and
therefore installing SP3 will not do. Granted if SP1a is already installed
then it is possible to go directly to SP3. But we do not know for a fact
what jb has or does not since he did not post the info. Gerry was posting
conservatively just in case the above is fact

@ Everyone. This is not so hard to understand.

If you have XP/SP1a or XP/SP2, you can download SP3.

If you only have XP(with no SP) or SP1, you cannot jump right to SP3.

You know that. I know that. So do the others who posted correct advice
to help the original questioner. Unknown, however, doesn't like me
pointing that his advice was inapproriate given that nobody knows what
is installed. You're wasting your time trying to intercede but thanks
for trying.

You've become a parrot. Why don't you just say Pretty Polly or Pieces Of

I think that the underlying reason for the dissent here is that Unknown is
only talking about *downloading* the service pack, not *installing* it. I
daresay one could *download* SP3 for XP with an unpatched Windows 95 machine
if you really wanted to.

The OP, jb, probably meant "install" in the original post, but he/she's
probably long gone, in which case we'll never know.

Unknown is a Troll on a personal crusade to annoy me. He pretends not
to understand. In another newsgroup yesterday he chose to squabble with
another Troll. It made me smile.

JB posted on 23 December 2008. He never made clear what exactly was
installed and never made a further post. He had some version of Windows
XP pre SP2. JB wanted to bypass SP2.

You really are demonstrating your ignorance. It does not seem to be a
pretence.

Please post a complete copy of the Stop Error report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

This is part of a standard response where a computer gives a BSOD error
in response when a user tries to boot and has not a posted a complete
copy of the Error report.

What I'm saying is that, strictly speaking, Unknown is right (although his
posting style is another issue altogether) - he only ever addresses the
issue of *downloading* the SP, which is all that was (rightly or wrongly)
asked about. Others had taken up the matter of installation requirements,
which may have obfuscated things.

I know...
JB wanted to bypass SP2.

Au contraire - I don't think he was trying to bypass anything. He said, "i
am unable to download service pack 2 for windows xp and i know that i must
before i download sevice pack 3. i cannot use my new ipod without getting
this done."

Literally you are right about what JB said and the statement I made in
my last post "JB wanted to bypass SP2" was incorrect. However, no one
with an ounce of common sense would take JB's statement literally given
that it was obvious that there was an intention to install.

That is correct.

He disgreed with JB's statement without having knowledge that only JB
had. He failed to explain the circumstances in which JB's assumption
might be incorrect. He chose to take literally what JB said when it was
implicit in what JB said that the intention was to install SP2 to
facilitate the later installation of SP3. Not a particulary helpful
contribution to solving the problem JB had encountered.

I was just pointing out that which no-one else had: that Unknown was
literal-mindedly harping on about *downloading* when everyone else picked up
on the fact that the OP would probably want to then *install* one SP or the
other. If Unknown had pointed this out, instead of simply repeating "read
what I wrote," it would have clarified things and saved time and nastiness;
but such is not his way. I believe he has more than an ounce of common
sense, but was merely enjoying being perverse (as well as terse).

Of secondary annoyance is that "jb" just did a hit and run, as so many do -
asked for help but never checked back in.

Perverse. Yes.
