No, you DON'T need SP2 to install SP3. SP3 includes all of
SP2+patches/hotfixes after that

SP2 is here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

SP3 is here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=en

(on both, remember that the page is for the english version, so, if needed,
"Change language"

You can go from SP1a to SP3. You don.t need SP2.

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3:

*Actually* - you need to be careful when you say, "No, you DON'T need SP2 to
install SP3." There is a case where that is not a true statement, well, or
it caqn be proven untrue at least.

If someone installs Windows XP x86 RTM onto a computer and thus - has a
working installation without any service packs (SP1a, SP2 or SP3) they
cannot just install Service Pack 3. They first have to at least install one
of the prior service packs. So they could install SP1a... Or they could
very well install SP2 first - and then they would be able to install SP3.

I cannot say I know *why* this limitation exists - never had the inclination
to look into it - but it seems to be true that you cannot install Windows XP
SP3 onto a working installation of Windows XP x86 RTM - you first have to
have a prior service pack installed. Or they could - if they desired -
integrate SP3 into their RTM media, make new media and use that to install.

I would be surprised if this is the case for the original poster - but...

Just to stick in my unwanted nose and add to Shenan's capable
explanation: Microsoft recommends having SP2 installed, although SP3
will install just fine over SP1a. Why then the recommendation? It's less
to install all at one time, which improves the chances for a successful
result. No one ever destroyed their computer by being conservative.

Did you bother to read what others had to say before you posted your
potentially misleading advice? You have no idea where jb is starting
from!

I did! Your statement of fact is not necessarily true. Your
understanding clearly does not match that of the others who have
answered the question correctly.

This is what you said "You do NOT have to download SP2 before SP3." You
told the other person that having no idea what version of Windows XP was
installed! In my book that is foolish! Knowing you from previous posts
you will still not comprehend what is being pointed out.

You do NOT have to download SP2 before SP3. What is it about that you don't
understand?

No Cody I try to base my advice on factual information.

How to obtain the latest Windows XP service pack

If the computer only has SP1 installed you cannot directly update to
SP3. The person you were advising clearly had something less than SP2
and your advice failed to take this properly into account.

The Op possibly does not have SP1a installed. We do not know that and therefore
installing SP3 will not do. Granted if SP1a is already installed then it is possible
to go directly to SP3. But we do not know for a fact what jb has or does not since
he did not post the info. Gerry was posting conservatively just in case the above is
fact
