Start by making sure the computer is in a common area (i.e. den, living room,
etc.) and not your child's bedroom There are loads of websites that discuss
how to help make sure your children stay safe on the Internet; here are a few:

http://www.fbi.gov/publications/pguide/pguidee.htm
http://www.cyberangels.org/

As far as actually monitoring what your child is doing, type "parental
monitoring software" into your search engine of choice (or click here:
http://www.google.com/search?q=pare...ient=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official)
I can't give any personal recommendations regarding specific software, but
many of them offer free trials of their wares. I hope some of this gives you
a good starting point, and please don't give in, no matter how much your
child may protest about an "invasion of privacy" or anything else - it could
truly be a matter of life and death

Good reply, lots of links,..biased, but in synce with current fears

Biased? well, heres an example: I'm 42 and I may have a frenzied talk with
your daughter about sex during a game of chess or battleship. I'm frenzied,
or mayby she is. I tell her the usual things about being safe on the
internet but she says she knows all that and likes me. Now I'm a vulnerable
guy, lol, I have no love of my life and your daughter is very sweet and
understanding of me, hence the frenziedness. You see? there is no fault here
at this point, Its my responsibility to inform your daughter that I am not
able to consent to any kind of sexual conduct online or off. I think you and
your daughter should know this. You need to "talk" to her...lol..sorry I was
a teen once and I didnt listen to a word unless it came from someone I
worshiped. I was 14 when I met Orville at my dad's funeral. he introduced
me to flying, a dream I had had for years he musta been 30 or so and he
taght me and another old guy taught me to fly airplanes. this is no glory
story. i didnt make it my career to fly but my point is some very caring
guys made feel like a proffessional, capable, person. (Thankyou Roland
Albright and Orville Moore and Terry Wickland)
(good guys to say the least, i loved airplanes and these guys taught me to
fly.

You need common ground..not your ex husband's infidelity, something your
daughter loves
who knows lol
rocks?
base your intervention on a common item?you know they are smart

For some requirements, you may find it easier to invest in a
3rd-party solution, such as NetNanny or CyberPatrol.

You need to be aware, however, that *NO* technical or software
solution is fool-proof, and _none_ can ever adequately take the place of
live adult supervision. If you cannot trust your children to
safely/properly use the computer without supervision, you may have to
consider limiting their access to it.
