IIS Lockdown with MS WinXP-Pro Updates

I am not very sophisticated when it comes to the various networking capabilities of WinXP-Pro. I need some help understanding the MS WinXP-Pro Updates and how some of them may lockdown IIS.

Not too long ago, I downloaded and installed all of the MS recommended updates for my computer through windowsupdates.com. After doing so, I was unable to publish any of my websites. I was later told that one or more of the installed updates may have caused a lockdown of my IIS. The rationale was that most users do not use IIS nor do they do any web publishing, so locking down these features is probably a good security move for most people. Not knowing what to do, I reformatted my computer and DID NOT install any of the MS WinXP-Pro updates. As a result, I was able to use Front Page and I have been publishing just fine

If the explanation I received was correct, then I have two questions
1. Can I install all of the updates and then manually unlock the web publishing features that I nee
2. If not, how can I identify which updates will lock these features so I can avoid them in the future

Obviously, my goal is to keep my computer up-to-date without sacrificing the web publishing features that I need

Thank you for your help

Sincerely

I also run XP Pro and IIS. I also keep my computer up to
date and the only problem I had with IIS is between
asp.net and installing MS.Net. I fixed it by uninstalling
both and reinstalling them.

With your problem there is a tool called IISLockdown
available from the ms site. Dl it and runit if ur
computer has been locked down. The tool if the computer
has not been locked down gives you a choice on what type
of server you are running. It should have front page
extentions in that list.

Hope this helps
