I am having problems with my computer and did a reinstall of windows xp pro
with the upgrade option so as to keep what I have. I keep running into the
fact that it is looking for igfxcfg.exe file. I found it in
c:\windows\system32 folder. I was created in 2004, but changed on Novemeber
2007 and nothing else has happed to it. I can not finish the install, can
not get into safe mode, can not do a restore. I can not do a fresh install
because I have web sites, music I created, software I not longer have access
to because it was lost in a move.

What to I do? PLEASE HELP. I looked this file up an I keep getting info on
it being a virus or trojan.

This is urgent, have to get it fixed by early this noon.

I don't know why you think this file is malware or what searches you were
doing, but - bearing in mind that malware can be called anything - this
file belongs to Intel drivers. Since you didn't say what problems you were
having that caused you to do a Repair Install, I'd have to conclude that:

1. You should try reinstalling your motherboard (chipset) drivers and
possibly also your video drivers if video is Intel and onboard; or

2. Whatever was wrong with the computer was not fixed by the Repair Install
and you should fix the issue or back up data and do a Clean Install.

is the system in now, You choose the upgrade option? upgrading from what
operating system?

come up, put in a new video card, nvideo geo force 990 or something like
that. I have the CD for that.

I do not see how I can do a backup, and back up to what, I can not get into
the system, I can only see what is on the ssytem when I get this error and go
to c:\windows\system32. Even after I point to the file which is there, it
just reboots and runs set up again, then ask for that file.

If I can get the data off the computer or do a back up somehow, will the
applications work?

I am not saying this to hurt your feelings in any way but you really should
take the computer to a local computer professional. I say this based on the
amount of computer knowledge you show in this post and because I would hate
for you to lose any important data. I'll give you links and suggestions,
but I do think you should consider having someone skilled take care of the
machine for you. This will not be someone at a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad
type of place; get recommendations from family, friends colleagues.

There is no way for me to accurately diagnose the issues with your computer
without seeing it but from what you have written there is a good
possibility that you have one or more hardware components failing.

Of course, the hardware could be good and the computer severely infected -
or both. There is no way for me to know.

You can back up data even when you can't boot into Windows if the hard drive
itself is physically sound. Here are a few ways:

1. Pull the drive and slave it in a computer running a working install of
XP/Vista. Depending on the target drive's characteristics, you may need a
drive adapter; i.e., laptop-to-IDE or a SATA controller card, etc. A
usb/firewire external drive enclosure works very well, too. Use the working
Windows Explorer to copy the data to the rescue system's hard drive and
then burn the data to cd or dvd.

2. Often XP/Vista will not boot with a slaved drive that has a damaged file
system. In that case, boot the target computer with either a Bart's PE or a
Linux live cd such as Knoppix and retrieve the data that way.

Once all hardware has been confirmed good and data has been backed up, a
clean install is probably warranted.

Make sure you scan all data with a current version antivirus using updated
definitions before copying it back onto a clean machine.

Malke,

My feelings are not hurt. I have certifications in web development, not
hardware.

However, I am doing this for someone and found out that since it is an
emachine, that it has an on board video card which was diabled when the geo
force was installed.

Therefore I am just trying to find out how to bypass that part and the
installation can complete.

However, I think you advise is excellent on putting the drive into another
computer since they had another on and I have two as well.

I will follow you directions and I am pretty sure it will work because
yesterday on my first attemp to reinstall I was able to get into safemode.

I did a disk clean up on that drive then.

I think you are saying you started an upgrade/repair install of XP and it
failed during that setup now it is stuck in a setup loop? if so then see if

OK, I got pass the part where it was asking for the igfxcfg.exe file by
renaming it.

The install went through, but now I am hung on the Windows screen, it just
sits there and never goes any further. It looks like it finished installing
and I am at the Windows screen that has the blue bar running under the
Windows Logo. After a while the blue bar stops.
