Turning a File Tree to a Text File.....

C

casey.o

I'd like to turn the file tree of certain folders on my computer, into a
text file. The reason is because when I go to a WIFI, I dont remember
what files are on my home computer (desktop). Particularly when I
download TV series and music videos from youtube. What I want to do is
just create a list of files in a text file, for specific folders.

I used to do this on my old Dos computers, using a command such as

DIR > FILENAME.TXT

This works in windows from the command line, but I cant get the long
file names. So, I'll end up with filenames like musicf~1.mp3.
That's worthless!!!!

Anyone know how I can do this in XP or Win98, or even Dos if there is a
way to get the long filenames?

Then all I have to do is print the list, or just copy the text file to
my laptop so I can view it when I'm not at home.

(Maybe there is something to download for doing this???????

These are what my notes say.

This one is flattened, suitable for scripting.

dir /B /S C:\ > output.txt

This one is a tree.

dir /S C:\ > output.txt

And this one has more information.

dir /?

I don't know all the rules, for what has LFN and what doesn't.
Sometimes the prompt in Command Prompt switches to 8.3 filenames
instead of LFN, but I don't know why it does that.

LFN is presumably protected by patent, and that's why some mobile
devices with FAT32, don't have a working LFN in their file system
display. It's to avoid patent issues with Long File Names. It's
possible that some old version of MSDOS doesn't support it either.
OK, I remember what it was now, if you were using the NTFS4DOS
thing, it was missing LFN in the display, making it useless
for navigation of a NTFS partition.

I'd add to that first one /On to put the list in alphabetical order:
DIR /B /S /On C:\ >directry.txt

What do you do when you get the error messsage:

"The directory name ....... is too long."

Use a file name shortener on your MP3 collection.

If the partition is NTFS, it's possible NFI will allow you to
list the entire partition. Using your copy of 7Zip, you can likely
spot the nfi.exe in here, without having to install it as such.

There is one particular file name length that File Explorer
doesn't like (cannot delete it, either). But other tools
can take care of it, by calls to the file system. For example,
with ActiveState PERL I was able to rename a file, that Explorer
would not touch. There is precisely one file name length, one
character below max, that also prevents the user from "fixing" it.
And another tool, such as an MP3 file name shortener may be
required, just because of the bug in Explorer.

DIR /B /S /On C:\ >directry.txt

This works great. Here is a snip from my videos, this are just my
tornado videos. (below)

I did find that doing this on an entire partition can be a bit
overwhelming. My main storage partition, which contains a lot of small
..jpg files, clipart, text files. PDFs and lots of other small files as
well as all my music and some larger files too, created a 4.4meg text
file. So I went to the music files and did just them, and got a file
about 355K. Much more managable.....

I can see sorting that out will be fun :)

Some of my file lists are in the 25 to 30MB range.

When your text files get big enough, they become a
chore to work with.

Paul

Yeah, I dont want files all that big. My main thing are my music and my
videos folders. So I will just do those folders. Or if for example, I
intend to download another version of Firefox, I can go to the folder
where I have about 15 old versions stored. Or for example I just want
to save more tornado videos, I can just make a text file of that folder.

Otherwise I often come home with a lot of duplicates......

Although I was once pertty good at making batch files, I have forgotten
how to do some things. I was thinking of making a batch file to
automatically create folder trees like this.

Lets say it's called DT.bat (Dir Tree).
I can put in the commands
DIR /B /S /On >

But I'd need a place where it asks me to input a filename to save it
to, such as videos.txt

I'm not positive that is possible?????

But that may be more work than it's worth. It's not that hard to
remember to type in DIR /B /S /On > filename.txt (and of course be IN
the folder I'm wanting to do).

This is my method.

All downloads go into a single folder, no exceptions.

Say the file is

1234ABCD.MP4

OK, so I know the movie is about Tornados, Kansas, involves
a little dog Toto. I know that having seen Toto once, that
idea will stick in my mind. Later, if I use the search,
I know that "Toto" will be a good search term.

I go to file explorer, highlight the text and change the
file name to

1234ABCD__Tornado_Kansas_Toto_MSNBC_COM.MP4

So now I've recorded three tag words for the content,
some tags for the download source (in case it has malware
I find out about later). I don't generally make the file
name too long, and most of the time, only a couple tags
are needed for the most noteworthy part.

Now, later, if I planned on making a folder called
Tornado_Alley, I could do a file search in the file
explorer, use the word "Tornado", highlight drag and
drop those into the new folder.

So the secret to my system is tags. If a file
doesn't get tags, that usually means it heads to
the trash on a subsequent cleaning operation.

When Firefox downloads, I don't change the name.
I open the Download Manager, and use the "open the
folder this is in" button. Once there, I add the tags,
then go back to surfing again. Sorting files, is an
activity for a rainy day (when Download folder has
become too large).

I always add this to the XP computers I work on.
