You shouldn't lose anything, but there's always a small chance
something could go wrong, so back up any important data before starting.

Also will I lose my windows media centre and everything that gows with it?

Wouldn't that depend upon what specific operating system you upgrade
*to*? You haven't bothered to tell us that, so we can't provide a
definite answer. If you're upgrading to Vista Business, you'd
necessarily lose the Media Center functions; if you're upgrading to
Vista Ultimate, you won't.

By definition, an "upgrade" (as opposed to a clean installation) means
that all data, programs, etc. are kept intact.

However there are no guarantees that it always works perfectly.
However unlikely, it's always possible that something might go wrong.
For that reason it's prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything
you can't afford to lose before beginning.

Also will I lose my windows media centre and everything that gows with it?

That depends on what you upgrade to. Vista Ultimate includes the media
center functions, but Vista Business does not.

Correct me if I am wrong Ken but couldn't some (all?) of those multimedia
elements be downloaded afterwards?

I don't know if you have the flexibility or not since it was not mentioned but many who have large music stores be they Windows Media or Itunes store the files on a separate partition and also backup to an external drive. This approach allows and o/s to be upgraded or a clean install. Its much easier to reset the location in Media Player or Itunes than replace the music.

As an an example I have two unique partitions one for Itunes and Media Player on the slave drive and backup to an external and/o dvd.

If you do it right, no. What you will lose is a lot of money for an eye
candied OS that can't do anything that XP can't do.

This is evidence you don't have Vista and you don't know Vista.
Backup your statement that Vista can't do anything xp can.
Evidence...?
We're waiting.

Apparently Vista can't get viruses as easily as XP. But don't worry, Frankie
that is going to change pretty quickly. Soon Vista will be getting viruses
and malware as quickly as XP. <snort>
