Hi,

An in place upgrade from one version to another should not result in any
loss of data, programs, or user settings. However, it is *always* prudent to
backup that which you do not want to lose before doing any type of operating
system change.

If you do an upgrade, no you should not lose everything. Only if you do a
clean install.

HOWEVER, some installs do go bad and you end up losing data. So, I would do
a backup that you hopefully don't have to use.

It is always sage advise to backup before doing any major changes. What
happens if the power goes out right in the middle?

Always have a full and complete backup of important data. Data loss is an
issue of when, not if.
