IE7 Hanging

P

Paula Allton

Using XP Pro, all updates current.

IE7 'not responding' frequently. No consistent website or page associated
with 'hang'.

Microsoft no help re: hungapp on IE7 except suggesting all updates be done.
Since I have updates set to be done automatically, my system is up to date.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Paula

Problems can result when add-ons you have installed, such as browser
toolbars, are damaged or conflict with Internet Explorer.

Run Internet Explorer 7 in 'No Add-Ons' mode:

If you have XP: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)

Alternatively, you can create a shortcut on your desktop with the
following target path:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

If the problem does not occur in 'No Add-Ons' mode, then it's being
caused by one of the add-ons that you have installed. We can show you
how to identify which add-on is causing the problem.

Problems with Internet Explorer can also be caused by by malicious
software ('malware') that has been installed on your computer.

I do not install extra tool bars. Have found them to be a problem in the
past.

I check every 2 days for trojans, ect. and do automatic virus scans every
week. Nothing has shown up. Latest was done this am.

I will check out running in 'no add-ons' as you suggest and report back.

Thanks

Security level set at Med-High

Phishing definitely off - found it was a problem when first got IE7.

Remove temp files @2-3 days using Tools- Delete Browsing History-
cookies/temp files/history

Anti-virus thru McAfee set to automatic updates and automatic scan @ week.
Use their Scan For Spyware @2-3 days.

My system had to be redone due to lightening coming thru phone line.
Installed new HDs, video card, modem, etc. System was
good until the IE7 security update was done on 10/15. (At least that is
when I noticed hangups more).

Can I remove IE7 and all updates and start over with it? If I remove IE7,
will XP revert back to IE6 so I will still have a browser,
or will I have to reinstall from CD? Or is this a problem I don't need to
go thru.

One other thing - IE does not retain the previous page so that when I want
to go back to the previous page, I have to use refresh key and resend
all info. Very frustrating. Settings are as Microsoft refers to on there
link.

I really liked IE6 - got talked into going to 7 by repairman.

Before embarking on a backward step like going back to IE6 lets look to
see if we can see anything else giving problems.

What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.
