Hi,

We have a network with about 18 users on it and on
acouple of machines when they connect to the internet.
They can only get to some internet sites and not others.
This is not by design. I get error message "can not find
server" error for sites like Yahoo, AOL but has no
problem finding cnn, msn. How do you troubleshoot IE
Problems and do you have any ideas what I should look at
to fix this problem?

Thanks,

Pete

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to
hide extensions for known file types.
If HOSTS exists, rename it to HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Or, In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear your TIF also, and re-boot.

I have what sounds like a very similar problem. I have 3 machines (XP Prof;
2000 Prof and NT4) in a workgroup on a LAN sharing a common ADSL internet
connection with the XP as the gateway thru ICS. The internet connections on
the Win 2k and XP machines work fine, but the connection on the NT machine
will only load pages from the Google.com site. Attempts to load pages from
other sites cause IE to hang - ie it just keeps on trying to connect.

I have reinstalled NT4 on the machine and applied SP6a. I have installed IE
6 but not its service pack. (Previously the machine had been defined as a
domain controller and the internet connection worked OK)

I have:

1. disabled "Enable 3rd Party Browser Extensions"
2. renamed my Hosts file
3. loaded the latest Java VM
4. run ad-aware
5. tried running with the gateway firewall disabled.

None of this has changed anything. I still can only access Google.
Incidentally Google is not the default home page.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

No ideas, I'm afraid.
