Window crashes with no error IE6 SP2

IE 6 crashes with no error for the following steps:

1. Go to http://www.cnn.com/. The popup is blocked. Unblocking the
popups for this site does not seem to matter.
2. Click any news link.
3. In the careerbuilder.com ad in the right side bar, click More
Options.
4. Click the Back button.

The page crashes. No error reporting appears.

This is not limited to the CNN site. This is simply one reproduceable
example.

What could be causing this and what can I do to troubleshoot the
problem?

Thanks,

Cindie

If this is on Windows XP, see what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc <Enter-key>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred.
Double click---the information "may" give a clue.

BTW, does your IE browser "crash" under other conditions (not necessarily like those you mention) ?

Thanks Maurice! I didn't think to check the Event Viewer.

The information link in the Event Viewer points to this site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923996/en-us

IE6 was also crashing at other websites. The most crushing problem was
that my son was unable to use the web app for an online class. IE6
would crash every time he used the mail button (a serious problem for
him since all assignments are transmitted via that button).

I have updated to IE7 (release candidate), which does not crash under
these circumstances. If my son has further problems, he can use
FireFox. We'll report any IE7 issues as we come across them (if they
are not automagically reported).

I'll remember to use the event viewer next time I have a problem.

Hi Cindie,

For a school / university website, especially for online work, do the following tweak for Internet Explorer.

If you have Internet Explorer version 6:
Place sites into Exceptions list (to get around Pop-up blocking):
Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Popup Blocker>Pop-up Blocker settings

In block titled "Address of Web site to allow" type in
the actual web address for your school website

then click Add.

then press Close.
Apply changes.

Use a similar setting for IE7.
