I have IE6 on my Win XP Home Edition PC. It all used to
work fine. Since a few days (maybe after I installed
patches from Windows Update) it has stopped working. Every
time I try to open it it dies with the message "Internet
explorer has encountered an internal error and needs to
close. Sorry for the inconvenience" !! The details on the
error says the module is "inetdctr.dll"

I am unable to install a new version of IE6 because setup
says that I have a newer version already installed. I am
using Mozilla to get around this problem.

Any pointers on what I can do?

I'll be curious to see if you get any assistance; I am
having essentially the same problem. I'm on Windows 98,
w/ IE6. A couple of days ago, I installed patches from
the Microsoft website, and ever since, I've gotten a
response of "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a
problem and needs to close."

Though I can't access any websites, I can still access my
e-mail in Outlook Express.

Hi,
A Google search indicates that inetdctr.dll is part of IEPageHelper
(trojan/adware.)

Try the removal instructions at

If those instructions don't work for you, go to

steps 1-6 then step 7- post a HijackThis log to the forum at

Hi,
This is probably being caused by third party programs- malware/parasites.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to work.
You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.

You might also be able to browse and download programs from the address bar
of Windows Explorer.

Work through the solutions (CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.
