IE6 won't open pages for updates

Hi.
A friend on mine was having problems getting updates for the McAfee software
she installed. It keeps coming up with ActiveX controller needs to be
enabled. At first we thought it was a problem with McAfee. But in Internet
tools, Security I've set EVERYTHING to enabled and still have the problem.
The other thing that keeps happening is that he windows update is constantly
prompting for her to install the same update. It goes through the whole
process and says successful but still pops up a few minutes later prompting
her to install again. (BTW her setting is to install automatically so that's
odd that it's prompting her)
The other thing is that when we try and go to Update Windows thru' either
the Internet drop down menu, or through the Start, Help way, a message says
we're not connected to the internet, although we clearly are.
If we try to go to Microsoft or McAfee update pages, we get 'The page cannot
be displayed' syndrome. That is with anything that needs updating, office
etc.
All other pages comes up fine.
Any suggestions PLEASE
J

Since I wrote, I'm now getting a message when we try and use the Windows
update. It says it has to close due to LSA shell something or rather.
Any ideas?

Hi jb :)

See the infromation here the Sasser worm, what it is and how to remove it.

You should also download, install and run the following. Follow all
directions carefully.

Also..removing some types of scumware can leave damaged Winsock keys in the
Registry. Some types of warez use the Layered Service Providers (LSP),
which are little bits of software that can be added or inserted into the
Winsocks. Outward bound data from your computer to a legitimate destination
on the Internet can be intercepted by an LSP and sent somewhere other than
where it is supposed to go.

In order to correct the mis-direction, you should download and run the
programs below that apply to your OS, which should resolve the connection
problem. If you are unable to download these programs from the affected
machine, you can download them from another machine and copy them to a
floppy disk or CD, copy them to the hard drive of your machine, then install
and run them.

LSPFix
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.
