IE6 Won't launch

Hi,

Every time I try to start IE6, I get an error message and it won't run.

Here's what I've tried so far:

1. Per http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_ie_reinstall.htm

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%
\Infie.inf

This asked for the XP CD which I gave it; did something for about 30
seconds and then exited. But I was left with the same problem.

2. Downloaded and ran the vbs script from the same url as above.

This ran the same as above with no solution.

3. As per http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;q318378

a. Ran sfc /scannow. This didn't help. It reported no problems.

b. Used Regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components
\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

and changed the value of IsInstalled to 0.

At this point, I didn't know what MS meant by "Quit Registry Editor,
and then install Internet Explorer 6." or rather, I didn't know how to
install IE6 at this point.

I used the Win XP CD, went to the second option (Something like
add/remove components) where IE6 was checked. I unchecked it let it do
it's thing (which was nothing) then went back and checked it. As in 1.
above, it ran for a few seconds but didn't do anything that helped.

4. Reinstalled WinXP using the Upgrade option. After a complete
upgrade, I still have exactly the same problem!

That's where I am now.

I don't want to re-format and re-install because I have some old
applications for which I may not have the cd's and even the floppies.

There must be some way, short of a complete install of XP (not an
upgrade) to force XP to actually install IE6.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Frank

Hi, what is the error message you get? Have you tried
going to internet properties (in control panel), then
advanced, and then untick enable third party browser
extensions?

I have a full seperate install for ie6 SP1 if you need it.

Hi Steve,

The message is: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." There is an option to send
an error report.

This happens when IE is launched and before the browser window opens.

I tried your suggestion to disable third party browser extensions. After
that, it worked one time.

I was so excited. I thought the problem had been solved. But it's still
bombing out. I can't imagine why it ran that one time.

Right now I'm scanning for a virus. After the virus scan, I'll run Ad-
aware. Something seems to be fishy.

I may need that full seperate install for ie6 SP1. How can I get a hold
of it? Is it very large?

Please don't send it to my posted e-mail address, it's a phoney. You can
use (e-mail address removed)

Or is there another way?

Thanks, Frank

Right now I'm scanning for a virus. After the virus scan, I'll run Ad-
aware. Something seems to be fishy.

The virus check found nothing.

I ran Spybot Search and Destroy rather than Ad-aware. It found a whole
bunch of stuff. Mostly tracking cookies, but some items that required
registry changes. Some files couldn't be deleted because they were in
memory. But Spybot S&D offered to run on boot and it cleaned up
everything it found.

I now get a clean report from SB and from NAV. Both of those apps were
updated with the latest before running.

Yet the problem persists!

NAV can perform a virus scan but can't load into memory. It reports that
a necessary dll is missing. But I can't get to the Symantec web site to
find a fix since I can't start IE.

I used Task Manager to kill all processes I didn't recognize but still no
joy.

This is getting to be spooky. Something is broken; but I don't have a
clue.

Hi Steve,

I found IE6sp1 setup instructions at
http://www.petri.co.il/download_the_full_ie_package.htm

The problem is that when I tried this I got a message that a newer
version of IE6 was detected and the setup did not proceed.

What next?

Is there some way to make Windows think that IE6 is not installed?

I'm going to start a new thread on this question because this thread
doesn't seem to be getting much attention. See: "Can't re-install.
Already installed."

Thanks, Frank

Every time I try to start IE6, I get an error message and it won't run.

Hi,

The problem appears to be from q818529.

I removed it using Add/Remove Programs and IE ran!

Then I re-installed it and IE still runs.

Go figure.
