IE6 won't download...

I recently upgraded from 80Gb hard drive to new larger 160Gb hard drive and
had to reinstall my copy of Windows, verified and authorised by Microsoft as
genuine copy. BUT, after installing the O/S, in a procedure that encountered
no problems, I find that I am unable to download from Internet Explorer 6
using IE's own download manager program?!

Each attempt to download anything results in a 'hung' download procedure -
the download manager box opens and looks as if it is about to download, but
the download does not continue... It simply 'hangs' and no download is
forthcoming. The same thing happens when I use alternate Opera browser. It
seems the only downloads that I can make successfully are online updates from
Microsoft, as they do not need to use a download manager.

I have booted into 'Safe Mode' and then gone into IE> Tools> Internet
Options and cleared my cache and then gone into C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
and deleted the index.dat file from there in case it was corrupt, knowing
that it would regenerate anew next time IE was launched. But, on rebooting
my PC, the problem still remains?!...

Can anyone advise on how to resolve this problem with IE6 and downloading??
Please bear in mind that I cannot download v7 (or any other program on my PC)
as an upgrade to resolve the problem.

Yes, Frank, SP2 is installed. My OEM copy of XP Home Edition came with SP2
slipstreamed. I have updated Windows via the Microsoft Update page and have
all available updates installed.

Can you download if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking?

If you go to Start | Run and type msconfig what is on the startup tab?

You shouldn't have two anti-virus programs running real time protection.
Turn one off.

Disconnect from the Internet, uninstall Zone Alarm and turn on the Windows
Firewall. Do your download and then you can reverse the action.

Hi Frank,

I followed your instructions (to the letter) and tried to 'reinstall' IE6
using the methods you described, but this proved of no help at all?!

I became so frustrated (and exhausted) as I had tried umpteen times and ways
to resolve this issue, that I did a completely clean reinstall of Windows XP
on the C partition of my hard drive and reinstalled everything from scratch.
I had even tried a system file check scan to repair/replace any files that
may have become corrupted - no joy, I'm afraid. That being the case - and
needing proper control of my PC, an reinstall was my only option...

I must stress that I only used this as a last resort - Ideally (for other
users of the newsgroup who may have experienced tha same problem) I would
have liked to resolve the issue through process of elimination... But my
reinstall proved to be the answer to my problem - everything is now running
as it should be.

I can only conclude that there was a glitch in the initial loading of
Windows and certain registry details were not made as they should have been?!
A reinstall made sure everything was nice, neat and in order.
