IE6 WIN98 ActiveX not supported

I cannot seem to get ActiveX to work on this computer. All websites I go to
requiring ActiveX tell me ActiveX is not supported/started whatever. I've
gone into Internet Security Settings and enabled all ActiveX items. I've
reinstalled IE, and done all updates.

My suspicion is that there's something in the registry stopping ActiveX from
running, but I don't know what. Any help is much appreciated.

defense in depth changes introduced in cumulative security update 896688
(MS05-052):

I've got the same problem. I've even installed win 98 and win 98se with no
luck. What's going on? I can't find a solution anywhere.
