ie6 prompts for dial up

Colin

We have a couple of laptops that suddenly keep prompting
for a dial up connection when browsing, they are
connected via a LAN, the prompt seems to appear after a
page is downloaded. The settings are for "dial when no
network connection is present" This has always been set
as such because they also connect with dial up when
offsite.

Any Ideas please?

Thanks

Persistent little devils aren't they?

Check the content of the Trusted Zone in IE. Some dialers install themselves
there. Remove what looks suspicious, e.g., *.pluginaccess.com.

Here's a link to an excellent add-in utility for populating a comprehensive list
for the IE's Restricted Zone. It's easy to install and remove its content using
this utility:

IE-SPYAD: Restricted Sites List for Internet Explorer

The settings are for "dial when no network connection is present"

That's the cause of the prompt. Switch to Never dial...

....
they also connect with dial up when offsite.

So then they can dial manually.

BTW be prepared to see some DNS server not found or Red-X
symptoms. You would need a packet trace running to try to understand
whether they were legitimate. Unfortunately doing that could influence
what you trace. You haven't disclosed your OS yet so I can't give you
any more specific suggestions for diagnostics.
