No longer get dial-up disconnect prompt when exiting IE

Until recently when I exited Internet Explorer (and also did not have any
other internet accessing application running -- at least that I can see) I
was always prompted as to whether I wanted to disconnect my dial-up
connection. I am no longer receiving this prompt. I have checked that the
dial-up setting (accessable from Internet Explorer Tools menu) "Disconnect
when connection may no longer be needed" is still set correctly. I'd be
grateful for any ideas!

Do you have any other program running that may be using the Internet? (Or
that Windows may think is using the Internet?)

You might be infested with malware.

Frank,
In response to your post I installed Ad-Aware and it found a few things that
I hadn't previously found using SpyBot, and I'm now getting a clean report
from Ad-Aware. Unfortunately I still have the original problem (when exiting
Internet Explorer, I am no longer receiving the prompt asking if I want to
disconnect my dial-up connection even though I have the dial-up setting
accessable from the IE Tools menu "Disconnect when connection may no longer
be needed" set correctly). I don't have any other applications running. Any
other ideas? Thanks

That's why HijackThis! is used to supplement those tools.
It gives a report of *everything* that is installed and in use
without any subjective associations about what they are there for
or may be doing.

Unfortunately I still have the original problem (when exiting

The sorts of things which can cause this may not appear as separate tasks
but as extensions to the main iexplore.exe task. For example, for a long
time I had your symptom with IE5 without realizing that (apparently) it was
being caused by the Alexa Explorer bar. In fact I went without ExitDisconnect
for so long that the habits I developed to use OE for most of my hanging up
just have never left me, so most of the time when that prompt happens now
it is by accident. <w>

FYI here was my last comment about that:

Well I feel a bit foolish but in preparing to run HiJackThis I shut down all
of the hidden icons in the tool bar and that solved the problem. I had done
this before but apparently didn't have the connection setting set correctly
at the time. The offending program that was keeping the connection active
was "HP Digital Imaging Monitor" which came with an HP Printer/scanner and I
was also of course quite certain that the timing of the problem was not the
same as the timing of the acquisition of the printer/scanner! Anyway, I
uninstalled that software, which doesn't appear to be needed for anything
that I do, swore at HP (& myself) a couple of times and now all is right with
the world. Thanks to all above who offered assistance.
