IE6 opens then immediately crashes.

I run XP SP2. I had 2 viruses (ChodebotA- MSN, VirkelA) - both removed. After
that I uninstalled Norotn Antivirus, Internet Security and installed
Kaspersky Antivirus. On startup I had a message which indicated registry
errors but IE6 worked. I ran Registry Mechanic and did all the things it said
to - now probably a mistake I realise. After that when I go to open IE it
opens momentarily (about 2 seconds) then ...ffft ... it's gone. I downloaded
ie6setup and tried to run it. It said it detected a newer version of IE and
couldn't install. I have also lost Windows Media Player function - won't open
and Search Function on Startup Bar. I suspect a registry error or two. I have
temporarily installed Mozilla Firefox browser. I've run spybot - no active
spyware/malware/adware. After 4 days I can't resolve these issues. Can anyone
offer some advice to address these issues please ???

Thanks Frank - problem is that as far as XP SP2 goes the site only directs me to re-install - then get a message that I have to be running IE to download - back to original problem of IE not running.

If you do not have an SP2 upgrade CD, do a repair install of Windows.

The last page seems to have more caveats about the procedure,
probably better reflecting current experience. Even so, I'd like to see
more specific comments about how safe this procedure is to use
when the current maintenance level is XPsp2 + patches + current
maintenance on other Microsoft products.

E.g. my experience with the XP Repair was neither straightforward
nor successful. I ran (unprepared) into entry point conflicts, driver problems
and finally discovered that sometime during the process my partition table
had been changed, making further attempts at Repair problematic to say the
least.

In any case I wish I had known about these specifically before I ran into
this symptom during a repair:

<title>KB889288 - You receive the error message "UNREGMP2.EXE - Entry Point Not Found -" when you upgrade or repair Windows
XP</title>

<title>KB889114 - You receive a "The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in dynamic link library msdart.dll" error
message when you try to open a UDL file</title>

Makes me wonder if I shouldn't have tried uninstalling some stuff,
including even XPsp2, first, only trying the repair when
I had reduced my system to a level of maintenance where the
Repair was known to have been more successful.
