IE6 Failing to Open

C

clg549

When I click the ICON for IE6, it starts to open but "must close." But I can
open the task manager and run it from the run tab. All of the other icons
seem to work fine. Whenever a program trys to open an IE window, it closes.

I would appreciate any help--thanks

Hi,
Which version of Windows? (Including SP level- SP1,SP2,etc.)

First...
Is IE6 the default browser? Check that at Control Panel> Add or remove
programs> Set program access and defaults.
- - -
Next...
If you're running IE6 on XP SP2 start IE6 without add-ons from:
Right-click the IE icon on the desktop. Choose Start without add-ons.
or
Programs> Accessories> System tools> Internet Explorer (no add-ons)
If the problem goes away, you have an incompatible add-on installed.

For troubleshooting information see:
928426- Internet Explorer 7 may exit immediately when it includes an add-on

If the problem is not being caused by an add-on the computer is probably
infected with malware.

Thanks, I'm using IE6 with SP1. (on a very slow network).
Currently the default is set to "current browser". I will experiment with
setting it to IE. I will then try the other things you suggest. I plead
ignorance with a lot of this stuff but we will muddle thru. Thanks again

Here's some system info

IE6 SP1

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer HP Pavilion 061
System Model DW233A-ABA a520n
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 10 Stepping 0 AuthenticAMD ~2191 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 3.01, 2/10/2004

I changed the default to IE. Something had been calling IE and it would
bomb out leaving an error box on the screen. Somehow that got stopped. So
things are a little easier to check out. The Icon still doesn't work--have
to run IE from taskmanager but it does seem a lot more stable.

Thanks--any advice is greatly appreciated.

Why are you still running WinXP SP1 when SP2 was released over 4 years ago
and SP3 was released 7 months ago?

See this page as it applies to you: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
