IE6 on Windows does not download/display large GIFs (300k)

IE6 on Windows XP & 2000 will not display GIF images
that are over a certain size (~300K). All I see is a
little box with an X in it. I've tried both local GIF
files and GIF files from websites; neither will show.

Is there some configuration setting that is limiting?
Any other workaround?
