IE6 not opening PDF files

I don't know what changed, but my browser will not open pdf files over the
internet. I have acrobat reader 6.0.3 installed and it works fine
otherwise. Any ideas? I have tried reregistering the dll files and was
unable to get the shell32.dll to reregister, (in use) thanks in advance

Hi Jeff :)

You don't mention which version of Windows you are using, so I can only
guess at a solution. Try the following and see if it helps:

If you have 3rd party toolbars such as Google or Yahoo disable, or if you
have Yahoo Companion, uninstall it. Then see if that helps.

Update your Adobe reader to the latest version.

Click Edit> Preferences> Internet> check the box next to "Display PDF in
browser"

If still no joy, try the information here:

You might also check out this PDF reader; It's free, and much less bloat
than Adobe. I prefer it to Adobe.
Foxit PDF Reader 1.2 build 0201

Hope this helps.

When you *save* the .pdf file to your hard drive, can you double-click on it
to open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader 6?

Did you check the preferences in Adobe Acrobat Reader 6 to see if it is
enabled to display PDF files *within* the browser window? If not, you will
have to download and open the local .pdf file.

Yea, saving it to the hard drive and then opening it works fine, but I
should not have to do that.....

And did you check whether or not the option within Acrobat Reader is
configured to display the PDF within the browser window?

Some links to PDFs are deliberately written to be a URL to open a new window
that then retrieves the PDF file rather than providing a direct link to the
PDF file itself. Who knows why they do this stupidity, but it means that
the link won't open the PDF unless another browser window is allowed to
open, so maybe your popup blocker is at fault.

Also, if you disable AX controls in IE's advanced settings then you disable
the AX control for Acrobat Reader that operates as a BHO (browser helper
object). Or perhaps you used some utility that disabled its BHO. Get BHO
Demon and use it to see if the Acrobat Reader BHO is listed and enabled.

Thanks for the suggestions:.....

I followed the routines and ended up doing an uninstall / reinstall of the
Adobe Reader program and that fixed it. it is not quite as new a version as
I had before, but it works.... Thanks for the ideas. Jeff
