IE6 no longer opens web pages.

This is really annoying. I am unable to open a web page, yet all other
internet related activities work fine. I am running Windows XP Pro Service
Pack 2 with Office 2003. I also tried all the usual diagnostics, even
verified all files using "Start - Run - sfc /scannow". Still no luck. I then
installed the IE7 Beta3. It doesn't work either, same problem. When I type in
an internet address, IP or UNC, it acts like it is doing something (the
Windows flag is flying in the breeze and I have an hour glass for a cursor),
yet there is nothing in the Status bar stating that it is looking for,
finding, or connecting to anything ... just blank, and it will not error,
simply remains in that state until I stop it, at which time it will tell me:

After all of this, I installed FireFox, and it works perfectly. I do not
want to continue to use FireFox, but until I find out what is needed to
repair IE6, I have no choice. BTW, I also uninstalled Internet Explorer in
"Add-Remove Windows Components" and reinstalled it that way, to no avail.
Same exact results. One more thing ... I compared every tab in the Tools -
Internet Options - area to that of my old computer that works perfectly, and
there were two things missing in the "Advanced" tab of the defective install.
First, there is no "Java (Sun)" - Use JRE 1.5.0_06 for <applet> (requires
restart). Second, there is no "Microsoft VM" - JIT compiler for virtual
machine enabled (requires restart). Yes, that's right, neither of those
setting adjustment areas exist in the new box with the IE6 that will not
work. Could that be an issue, and if so, how can I fix it? Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

Sorry, my first message was a screw-up.

I had this problem occur today. My browser quit displaying web pages.
Every now and then, it'd display Yahoo, but then, it wouldn't open another
link within Yahoo.

I've looked all over for solutions, but I didn't find anything helpful.
Then, I turned off my firewall and tried to load pages. Finally, they
loaded! Everything works fine now, but I have no firewall.

So, does anyone know what I can do about this?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/26.html

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Have you all tried cleaning your cache? Go to > Tools >Internet Options
General Tab > under Temporary Internet Files >click on Delete Cookies, when
done with the delete cookies go on to "Delete Files" and click...this one may
take some time if you've not cleaned the cache in a while. When that's
finished click on OK and try browsing again.

This is a new installation. There are no cookies or history to speak of, but
yes, I cleared tha cache. IE was working for the first couple of days, then
all of a sudden, it quit working. I restored to an earlier restore point, but
that did not help. How can that happen?

Thanks for your response.

Hi,
Is this IE6 on WinXP? Is it XP SP2?
Which firewall did you disable- a third-party firewall?

Hi,
Did you try the steps posted by Frank Saunders?

Regarding Sun Java/JRE... It's not causing this problem, but you can
download the latest version from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Don't worry about the lack of Microsoft VM. Most Versions of XP didn't
include MS JVM.

Hope this helps,

Don,
Yes, I tried all of the options that Frank sent to me, and none of them
worked. I did not do the #6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may
display a blank Web page after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863
because I have Service Pack 2, or at least this is what it says in the Help
- About Internet Explorer 6.

Version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519
Cipher Strength: 128-bit
Product ID XXXXX-XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXX
Update Version SP2;

I did "sfc /scannow" and did it all the way.

One thing that really throws me is that I did a restore back to a point that
I know the browser was working from, and it still did not fix the problem.
I'm beginning to think that I am going to have to another complete reinstall.
This really sucks.

BTW, in answer to your other questions:

Is this IE6 on WinXP? Is it XP SP2?
YES it is Windows XP SP2 - New Installation - IE worked for a while, then
got screwed somehow. I guess.

Which firewall did you disable- a third-party firewall?
No, I disabled the Windows Firewall, because I am already firewalled behind
my DMZ.

Please Uncle Don ... can you help me? :)

Frank,

Here's an update for you on my IE problems. I have vound that if I try to
get to any site that is an https or an "mms" the IE browser works, but any
"http" it does not. It doesn't even act like it wants to go to the page. Does
that help any? Keep imn mind that I have gone into the "Tools - Folder
Options - File Types" and gone to URL:HyperText ransfer Protocol and checked
and changed the settings there to
Application Used to perform action = "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
Use DDE is checked
DDE message = "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application = IExplore
DDE Application not running =
Topic = WWW_OpenURL

I found that information somewhere else ... is it correct?

Thanks so much for all your assistance. I really do appreciate it.

I tried all of your suggestions, at least the pertinent ones to my situation,
and none of them helped, but thanks anyway, I appreciate the effort. There
has to be a reason for this, and I'm sure that we'll figure it out sometime.
In another response to you, I wrote that https and mms addresses DO work, but
http addresses just sit there and don't even try to go anywhere. Weird, huh?

Basically, yes, but some people have to uncheck Use DDE for reasons unknown
to me.
