IE6/McAfee error message

R

Rich

I am getting the following error message when I open my
McAfee Security Center: "wrong number of arguments or
invalid property assignment." The power bars for personal
Firewall and VirusScan Online read zero. According to
McAfee tech support the problem is being caused by a
corrupt file in IE6, (version 6.0.2800.1106). I have
tried to fix the problem by manually removing all McAfee
programs through the Regstry, per their instruction. I
have downloaded the IE6 service pack, 1 patch, I have
tried going back to a previous version and I have tried to
repair IE6 through the add/remove programs, and got a
message that it could not be repaired. I still get the
same error message. Is it true that the error message is
due to an IE6 problem, and if so, can anyone help me fix
it? Thank you.

After installing IE6-SP1 (whenever that was), did you then check in at
Windows Update, Rich?

FWIW I wouldn't let a McAfee application in my house, let alone run on my
PC.

I installed the updated IE6 just a few days ago, after the
problem arose. Is it true that the error is being caused
by Explorer? What steps do you recommend in fixing the
problem? Thanks for you help.

Tell me, does Add/Remove Programs work correctly? Had it been? Is that the
full error message?

What Windows version are you running on the machine? I get the creepy
feeling it's Win2K and that before you started getting the error you'd tried
to uninstall something via a Registry edit...perhaps even another McAfee
product <shudder>.

FWIW upgrading in hopes of fixing an existing problem (no matter what McAfee
says) is seldom a good idea and usually only makes trying to solve the
problem that much harder.

Here's a long shot which shouldn't hurt, no matter what you've done so far,
and might help: Reinstall the 5.6 Scripting Engine for your OS at this page:
