IE6 Hangs

T

Terry James

I am using IE6 SP1 on a W98 machine. The program sometimes hangs while I am
online and I have to exit IE6 and re-start. The intervals are random and
sometimes not at all.

I also sometimes get a message that 'IE6 has encountered a problem etc' This
is usually when I am downloading a McAfee update.

I have read an earlier posting on this that says MS have recognised the
problem and it is to do with a download 'Q810847.exe' I have done several
updates to IE6. How do I know whether this is my problem?

I have tried to re-run the IE6 install program but it hangs at 87% with a
horrible message that 'I must not re-start etc.

Can anybody help?

Hi Terry :)

Try cleaning the Temporary Internet Files and see if that helps:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

The TIF size should be set to 50-60 MB. Larger caches tend to be more prone
to trouble.
See "Resizing your Cache"
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Hope this helps.

Thank you Jan II, I have done what you have suggested. We will see. I did
run a Spybot Search and found 13 bits of spyware and deleted them.

I still have not resolved the problem of the ' IE has encountered a
problem............... etc' When I ask it to identify the problem it says
that it is an unknown error and sugests I use a Virus Checker, which I do. I
also use a firewall.

Help would be appreciated from anyone.

Hi Terry :)

You likely still have a hijacker and/or malware on your system. In
addition to updating and running your AV, download, install and run the
programs below in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled. Rerun with your
SpyBot in Safe Mode and be sure it is fully updated. Some malware can
replicate itself repeatedly if not removed properly, so even if you have run
some of the programs listed here, it is important that you run them again
according to the information below so that Windows is not operating to hide
any files 'in use' Follow all instructions carefully:

CAUTION>>> Backup all documents and files before removing any spyware!!

Most importantly, download install and run CWShredder here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html
or here
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

Then download, install and immediately update these three programs before
running:
AdAware SE - Update immediately after installing
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button
Microsoft Windows Antispyware Program (Beta)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Then visit these sites (if possible) to test for parasites and help with
basic cleaning:
On-Line Check

and
Quick-Fix Protocol.

Next, do an Online scan here (if possible) -

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Download Pocket Killbox from
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe
and put it on the desktop where you can find it easily, if needed.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

You should also get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX to have at hand if needed,

will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

Hi Jan II

You were right. It was Malware. I had already ran Spybot and it gave me an
'all clear'.

Rather than go through the method you suggested, (which seemed a bit
daunting to me), I tried Webroot Spy Sweeper.

It showed up 3 bits of malware. (2 Hijackers and one dodgy cookie).

I am now very wary of Spybot.

I would run Webroot SS all the time in background but it takes an age to
load. (5mins or more, There are 95,000 'fingerprints' to load).

Deleted the malware and, fingers crossed, all seems OK.

Many thanks your help. It put me on the right track

You're very welcome! I'm glad to hear you were able to resolve your
problem. Good job!

Not all detection and removal programs have all the necessary definitions to
detect and remove all of the various types of scumware out there. SpyBot is
mostly or detecting and removing spyware, and does that pretty well. But,
there are many other types of scumware you might have on your system it is
not able to detect, or remove. That is why there are other types of
programs that have definitions to detect and remove certain types of
scumware. SpyBot told you what it was able to detect and removed them, but,
if it does not have the def's for other types of scumware on your system,
then it won't report them. That it is wise not reply only on SpyBot and/or
AdAware. :)

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.
