IE6 hangs when attempting to clear temporary internet files

Hi all,

I upgraded from W2K Pro to XP Pro a couple weeks ago. Everything has seemed
normal with my upgrade... until now. I stumbled across this problem while
getting tech support from a credit card vendor; accessing my account online
caused IE6 to hang. They gave up on me (and my machine). Here's what's
happening:

When I attempt to clear the cache from within IE6...

Tools > Internet Options... > (Temporary Internet files) "Delete Files..."

IE6 hangs. I have to kill the window in Windows Task Manager.

When I attempt to clear the cache through the Control Panel...

Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Internet Options >
(Temporary Internet files) "Delete Files..."

I get an error message entitled "RUNDLL" with error text:

"An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL
"C:\WINNT\System32\inetcpl.cpl",Internet Option"

I've searched MS's support website under both the IE and Win XP headings. No
luck. So... I don't know what to do and I don't know how to recover. Any
ideas?

Two details:

IE6 version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633
Update versions: SP1; Q832894; Q831167

XP upgrade was an /upgrade/ from W2K and not a clean disk install.

Maybe one or more of cache folders that are used by Microsoft Internet
Explorer is damaged. Try cleaning up your Temporary Internet Files
Folder folder using the Disk Cleanup tool (cleanmgr.exe), and then run
Internet Options again to see if the exception error still occurs.

For more information about "Disk Cleanup" search the Windows XP Help and
Support Center for the words in double-quotes.

Hi Carrie,

Thanks for the response. I tried what you proposed. The result? The Disk
Cleanup tool hung! I haven't had much time to follow up on this problem...
but I will probably return to it this weekend. I definitely intend to follow
this mystery through to resolution.

I recently had a similar problem which also included IE hanging during
browsing. I assume that had something to do with IE trying to automatically
manage the cache. I found that it was a corrupted index.dat file in the temp
int files directory. I think this file is used all the time you are logged
on so it is difficult to delete so that IE can create a new one. I have a
network so I just logged off to the login screen and used a network computer
to delete the index.dat file. IE created a new one on start-up and now all
is fine. HTH.

Cheers
