Can't delete IE6 temporary files (Windows XP Home)

Just recently, attempts to manually remove temporary internet files via the
Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Delete button results in a program
hang-up with a continual hourglass cursor. An error message says IE6 is not
responding and gives the option to notify Microsoft. Can anyone suggest the
likely problem, and how to fix it? This is a Windows XP Home system.

Pat,

See section "Completely Deleting the Temporary Internet Files and index.dat" at Mike's site:

Clearing the TIF as stated in the above article, as a one-time procedure might resolve the problem. If the problem persist, you need to identify if a running application (or A/V software) is causing this.

Have you tried running CLEANMGR.EXE from Start, Run?

Might help.
